The previous Df shots are nice, (small) but the film shot here is much better, more natural and more organic ergo:NICE. I LIKE this one!

Great shot and can I say you seem to have a beautiful house as well! 🙂

Can you tell us a bit more about the Mamiya? I have been thinking about buying a medium format film camera and this seemed a good option so I would love to know your view on it. I am also looking at the X-pan II.

I know you were not asking me (you were asking Peter) but for what its worth here goes: I have had both and they are both excellent. You could be very happy with either. BUT, they are totally different. especially in the hand.
On a personal level I prefer the Xpan 11 which I still own and use. The Mamyia is of course conventional in 6×7 format. The Xpan is either Panoramic or normal 35mm at the flick of a switch and can be changed back and forth mid roll. Useful. The viewfinder brightlines change accordingly. I use mine mostly in Pano. It makes for a refreshing change. The Xpan works well with TriX and there is a marriage with Provia 100. Not surprising really considering both camera and film are made by Fuji.

The lenses on both are excellent but if pushed I would say the Mamyia’s are better at the edges. If I did not have any other cameras and was only allowed one of these two I would choose the Mamiya. Its more versatile and will give better enlargements when compared to the Xpan in 35mm mode. In pano mode the Xpan will (in my experience) just win but only by a whisker. I do like the image quality of the Xpan when printed. Best advice: Go and play with both. The type of picture making you do may well be the final arbiter. If I had the Mamiya again (uh-oh gas attack pending) I would have the 80mm, 65mm and the fabulous 43mm (had ’em all before). While I did have the 30, 45 and 90 for the Xpan I now have only the 45. The 30 and 90 were nearly unused, but that’s personal taste.

Apologies for hi-jacking your thread Peter, hope it does not cause any offense..

      Kind regards

      John

Are you kidding me John, I welcome your knowledge and helpful comments.

Kostas, I can tell you without hesitation that the output from the Mamiya is incredible and the optics are first rate.

Peter, thanks for the info. I asked because I have not seen you commenting a lot on the Mamiya 7 and I thought that maybe you were not sure about it, so it is good to know that you actually rate it highly.

I want you to know that if I get a film camera it will be your fault! 🙂 I never considered one before I started reading your posts.

          Best, K

This image was part of my initial “test shots” roll. I just haven’t had a chance to photograph much with the Mamiya 7II while I’ve been sorting out my digital needs.

However, I’m really looking forward to taking it out and putting it through its paces. As I’ve mentioned, the output is incredible: the combination of optics and large 6×7 film bests anything I’ve been able to get out of the 35mm format.
