…Ok ok…so you bought one. I’ll eat crow. Extra BBQ sauce please. 🙂

    Congratulations!

That arrived early! (Where did you pre-order from?)

Now then, a few questions I’m sure we all are pondering:

    1. I (we?) thought you were a 50mm shooter?!
    2. You don’t like external viewfinders!
    3. You love rangefinders.
    4. Why now? What made you jump? I know the image quality is superb…but why not wait until the air clears regarding any successor? (50mm lens? Detachable? Built-in EVF?)

Anyway, enjoy the new toy…and let us know how this works out: I have never actually been more tempted!

Mark, in answer to your many, many Qs:

      1. Yes, I’m a 50mm shooter. That is one reason I held out on the original RX1 for so long.
2 Yes, I don’t like external viewfinders. And I love optical viewfinders (vs. EVFs).
      3. Yes, I love rangefinders (have a look around at this site…)
      4. Why now? I couldn’t ignore the small form factor and amazing sensor any longer.

Who knows, this could be a repeat of the whole Pentax 645D fiasco.

Enjoy Peter..packs a big punch for the size. Be curious to get you thoughts on whether you prefer OVF, EVF or use without either.

Well, I purchased the EVF when I purchased the camera… they are sort of made for each other so I wasn’t going to play that “should I, or should I not?” game.

The EVF is great. I used in store about 2 weeks ago for thr first time. Very hard to buy in Australia for some reason. I agree with you…I wouldn’t buy it without it! Have fun. As for my colour images it’s good old film thanks to the man from Alberta who kindly set me up with a Zeiss Ikon…..My M6 sale has come back at me very quickly!

Ha, ha, ha! I love it. I suggested this song for a friend’s wedding in fact…

“This is the end, my only friend the end.”

However, these lyrics are also in that song:

“Can you picture what will be, so limitless and free…”

      Thanks for the laugh, Ian.

      Peter.

Wow! Very, very curious what you can do with CMOS Peter.. Because CMOS and Peter in one sentance is almost a curse?!
What I’ve seen from this tiny powerhouse is gorgious. Now the numbre of great beautiful pictures will even be more thanks to you.

    Enjoy!

      Hi Jeffrey,

In answer to your question, Ashwin’s 645D is definitely not mine.

Thanks for your comments as well. Yes, I’ll be giving CMOS a try – Sony has made it palatable for me. Perhaps it’s just the M240 and me that don’t mix 😉

Hi Peter. I think you will find that the RX1R files are very M240-like. I’ve had the M240 for a couple of weeks now (I sold my MM and M9 in place of an M240 and an film MP!) and also have a D800E. The sensor in the M240 performs very similar to the RX1 that I don’t have anymore and the D800E. Noise performance on the RX1(R) is outstanding though, but 3200 and below they are very similar. In my opinion the M9′s lower dynamic range gives it a certain look out-of-camera that one may have a preference for but the M240 images can be PP to look just like them.

I actually miss my RX1 and would by another if the AF were improved a bit, they offered an integrated EVF, and would love it if they had a 50mm version!

By the way…live view is awesome on an M-camera. Definitely for landscapes and ultra wides it is super cool. The nice LCD is a great upgrade. Shutter sound…quieter for sure but that RX1(R) has the ultimate shutter! (besides a film camera that is).

          Hey MJ1,

          Congratulations on the M240/MP!

You know I like you and all, but I have to respectfully disagree with you on a few points:

The “wisdom” I’m reading on the internet over the past few months is that M240 files can be made to look like M9 files. They can’t.

Second, the RX1(R) files are superior to the M240 files.

Third, the RX1(R) shutter is quieter than even film Ms.

Lastly, the camera “of the year” for me is still the M9, despite its inferior dynamic range…

Oh, I agree, a built in EVF and a 50mm lens of the same quality level as the current 35mm would be a welcome addition to the RX1 lineup.

          Peter.

Hey Peter thanks for your comments. I know that the RX1(R) clicks are quieter but they are close I just meant that film clicks are very quiet as well.

The RX1(R) files I would agree are superior compared to the M240 at 35mm only and also only at f/2 and below. At F/1.4 and other focal lengths the M240 trounces the RX1(R) haha! I think this is mainly due to the lens, however, as the sensors are very similar save noise performance.

I find that the RX1(R), D800E, M240 offer very similar sensor performance except for noise above ISO 3200. The M9 may have a unique signature that is hard to achieve in post but personally I’m glad that there are differences.

I think you will find though, should you ever own a M240, that your new RX1(R) is very similar. If you want to truly know if the M240 can be made to look like an M9, just play with your RX1R files!

The M9 should be the camera of the decade though, not just camera of the year! haha!

My .20 worth purely on observation. I own the MM and have never owned the M9, Rx1 nor the M240. So I am along way from being qualified.

However given I have a preference for B&W images I have noticed the following:

The Rx1 seems to be able to produce a good range in tonal adjustment from deep blacks to grey scales. Many people commented on it at the time of images coming online. The MM naturally enough is the same and fair to say perhaps the next step up, but maybe not by much.

However, colour aside, I am yet to see one B&W image from the M240 which has depth in it. Obviously this could be due to a lot of things (one being there really still isn’t a lot of them out there still!) but the files in B&W seem to have a sheen or gloss sitting over the top of them. Hard to describe. I am sure you could put two images together and i’d struggle to tell the difference, but no one seems to be really producing the same results in the M240 as the Rx1. No doubt someone with good PP skills would bring this about. Just interesting I have not seen it yet.

I am on the wrong track in my thinking?

Hi Peter, I guess I am late to the party, but pretty please, some samples and comments about the new ‘Baby’ before your time off. We’re all waiting. And then, enjoy time away from the blog, but keep it reasoanbly short. Oh, and I see an M in your future once you get used to CMOS. Just saying.
    All the best,

I bought a RX1 about 6 months ago – my opinion of the camera is that it takes great pictures BUT it is a joyless camera to use. It feels like a giant point & shoot when I shoot with it, the menu system is rediculous and when you attach the EVF it becomes unwieldy. Once again the image quality is fantastic but I will stick with my M9 any day of the week – wondering what your initial thoughts are?

    Hi Peter, Very good news.
I’m eager to see what you can do with the RX1S. I bought a RX1 in January and travelled 2 months with it. It’s a very discreet and efficient camera, with beautiful IQ.

Despite the equipment, the way you turn life into pictures always have inspired me. But, I confess that I want to know and learn what can you do with this camera.

    Regards,

    Daniel

Why did you buy last year’s model instead of the RX1R/B, which is now becoming available? Do you think the new model’s improvements could have helped you capture the “decisive moment” on a more reliable basis?
