Guest Post [1]: Life’s Little Moments.

2012, Guest Post, Inspiration, Life's Little Moments, Portrait

For the first time on this site, I’ve decided to post another photographer’s work.

Luiz Paulo emailed me yesterday (see message below) and, after clicking on his links, two of his images caught my eye and made me think, “I wish I had taken that” — which is the highest form of praise I can convey to a fellow photographer.

In fact, these two images are so in keeping with my personal philosophy of capturing the beauty of Life’s Little Moments, that I was inspired to create this, the inaugural:

Hi Peter.

May I introduce myself: my name is Luiz Paulo, and I’m from Brazil.

I’d like to humbly say your work is so great and inspiring that it has encouraged me to use a range finder system to capture “Life’s Little Moments“, like you say. Being a father of a young child, I know it wouldn’t be an easy task (by technical issues which you certainly know better than I do).  On the other hand, it’s not so difficult as I’d supposed — and the results are better than I could expect.

I think you have a special site where great ideas can emerge.  Congratulations on your nice work.

If it doesn’t bother you, please check out my last photos at LFI Kids Category and LFI M9 Master Shots (I’m registered as “furia”).

All the best,

Luiz Paulo

Dear Luiz,

What a wonderful message to receive!  Thank you so much.

I think you truly understand what it means to capture “Life’s Little Moments” and it’s obvious your beautiful daughter has served as a wonderful inspiration for you.

I enjoyed viewing all of your images, but I would have to say the two images I’ve posted here are my favourites.  There is something very “poetic” about them and I congratulate you for having captured them with such visual eloquence:

Once again, thank you Luiz!

Actually, this was captured this week… but something about him made me think of a bygone era.

I also could have called this Worker 11, as it follows my previous 10 Worker images.

In the past, I’ve sort of criticized the 50mm Summilux ASPH as being “too perfect” of a lens, but I love how it has rendered him, and this moment.

This was taken just prior to the sunset, as the light cast a warm glow.

All the previously washed out nuances of colour and texture in the environment seemingly emerge from nowhere and take on a golden hue — this is what happens at the so-called “golden hour“.

Advertising on Prosophos.com?

Q&A

A few months ago, the good folks at WordPress contacted me directly and informed me about their new WordAds* initiative.

In short, this initiative would allow for advertising on my site and, in return, I would receive financial compensation (amount unknown).  My initial reaction was to be wary, as I don’t condone visual pollution of any sort, and I like the clean and simple look of this site.  However, as time has gone on, the site has drawn more and more viewers:

I have correspondingly invested more and more time running Prosophos.com, often spending several hours a day posting images, answering comments and individual private e-mail requests for help, writing articles and lens field reports, and honing the overall interface.

I’ve slowly realized that I can’t keep going at this pace, without somehow giving up more of my “real work” time.

I’m left with a couple of options:  I could focus on only posting images, and not respond to questions in the comments section or to private requests for help.  Or, I could give WordAds a chance.  Obviously, I very much enjoy writing and interacting with everybody who visits this site, so the first choice is — in my estimation — not really a choice at all.

So the decision has been made.  Starting soon — possibly next week — you may see advertisements on this site.  I’m told I can shut them down at any time.

We’ll see how it goes.

I hope you understand, and I would appreciate any comments on the matter.

Respectfully,

—Peter.

ADDENDUM (May 14, 2012):  I have held off introducing advertising for now, as doing so would require changing my site theme/interface, which is not something I’m prepared to do.  I’ll keep you posted as things develop…
