Colour Science.

2026, Favourite, Inspiration, Q&A, Teaching point

Yes I know, colours can be tweaked easily when working with RAW files, and colour perception and appreciation is subjective, blah blah blah, but…

Files that provide a more true-to-life colour profile as a starting point often result in images that are more visually pleasing than those with a bad starting point.  And it is not always possible to bridge that divide, especially with skin tones, greens, and blues.

Admittedly, this doesn’t matter so much if you’re going to apply heavy-handed plug-in filters to your images.

With all of this in mind, the two cameras that I’ve encountered that have the best colour science straight-out-of-the-camera are:

  1. The Hasselblad X2D series
  2. The Ricoh GR IV

I kind of like what Sigma has done with the BF colours too, though they are not true-to-life.

And Peter, you should know because you have consistently produced photographs with true to life colors. I have always marveled at your skin colors.
