I hope that’s not true, though I suspect you may be correct. Most digital B&W images I see on the web are processed garishly to appear pseudo-HDR. Surprisingly, the resulting in-your-face look is often praised.
Why I keep coming back to film can be summarized by this image. In it, you will find true black and true white, and all the subtle shades of grey in between. An allegory for life.
