Hockey Girl, in action.

Hockey, Inspiration, Leica 75mm Summarit f/2.5, Leica M9(P)/M-E (CCD Lives!), Portrait, Q&A, Sports, Street, Teaching point

This was photographed through the arena glass and under poor lighting, using the Leica M9/M-E and 75mm Summarit (see my review here).  Not exactly “sports gear” but good enough to get this shot of my daughter.

Technical considerations:

  • f/2.5 | 1/350 sec | ISO 1250
  • The DNG file was “pushed” two stops in LR for an “effective” ISO of 5000.
  • White balance was manually set during post-processing.

  1. Nice. I was unprepared when I tried shooting at the rink for just how “muddy” the light was (not to mention all my images as well)… and that, of course, with far more “suitable” gear. Ha! Proving yet again what must be suitable is the photographer, not the gear.

I’ll bet she likes this, she looks solid on her skates, positive, focused, and ready to go, although she probably remembers six important plays she was involved in that you didn’t capture,,, ah, the life of the father/photog… ;-).

  2. My god, Peter, you’ve become a professional sports photographer as well! And with a rangefinder no less. This is fantastic.

    1. …This is old news Henry!

      😉

If memory serves me correctly, it was rangefinder sports photography which first brought me to Peter’s site a few years back.

Nicely done again here Peter–I quite like this method for pushing the M9 sensor. Did you apply any NR in PP?
