Prosophos Open Letter to Leica

.

.

Many of you prefer the rendering of the Leica M9 CCD sensor over the M240 CMOS sensor at low ISO values, and have consequently signed My Open Letter to Leica.  For those who haven’t, please consider doing so if you want to advocate for an updated CCD sensor in a future M model.

Thank you,

—Peter.

On FB earlier tonight!! Thought…why not ask the question!!

He seems a nice bloke answering peoples questions and applaud him for being on a Leica Hub group discussion. Was about the new acquisition of medium format camera manufacturer….

“Andreas H Kaufmann Doing a medium format sensor is not that complicated (we have it in the S, by the way..), it’s always about the lenses and a few other things like the shutrter etc.

Andrew Gemmell Andreas, any chance of maintaining a CCD product alongside the CMOS line? PS You nailed it with the MM !!

Andrew Gemmell “Andreas H Kaufmann I completely understand and appreciate that. Of course I was being a little opportunistic and cheeky with my question! I applaud you for been part of this conversation..If I may though I’ll provide a little background….new to using a RF, new to Leica. I use the MM. The experience and tactile feel has been incredibly enjoyable and never say never, but I think you’ve got me for life!! However one thing which has drawn me in is the combination….that being the tactile feel and simplicity and stopping and thinking ALONG with a digital camera that maintains a classical appeal (different to many others). Andreas from a new and passionate Leica user I hope the whole combination can continue hand in hand as Leica evolves….Thanks for your time and wish you all the best for 2014.”

Thank you Andrew. I would have been surprised if he had said “Oh Yes! We now realize the CCD sensor was special – that Prosophos guy was correct.” 🙂

Truth be told, I doubt they’ll ever come out with another CCD-based M — but I’ll keep advocating for it, because, well… in my mind, as long as I’m trying, there’s always hope.

Probably you’re right Peter. But hope is the last thing to die…

Just out of curiosity, Sinar’s backs use CCD sensor from Dalsa, same company that supplies sensors to PhaseOne. And Dalsa has, right now, full frame 35mm CCD sensors to offer. Whether this 35mm CCD sensor is better than the current one used by M9s (or usable in M bodies) would another question…

Co-incidentally I tried the a7r in the Sony shop yesterday. Ergonomically better than the RX1, in my opinion, with extra grip, layout and slightly larger, however after 5 minutes the top knuckle of my thumb was sore from holding the camera. Nice camera though but not me personally.

i bought an A7R to go along with my M9, and i could not be happier. It works amazing on all my Leica glas, and i love this little camera. The viewfinder is much better than the EVF of the M240, so are the images, in my opinion. I understand that this cam is not for everybody, but it works great for me. the best of both worlds, ccd and a7r 🙂

here is a shot from today, a7r with Nocti, ooc jpg

Looks very nice, Marc. Thanks. The sensor in the A7R is state-of-the-art CMOS, for sure. I was looking at several of its files at 100% magnification and can unequivocally state that Sony did a great job.

What I can’t understand is why don’t Leica do a deal with Sony and put this sensor in M240? I would be enough for me to jump in.

Marc enjoy the new camera and a nice combination! As I mentioned above a nice camera from the short time I had and you’ll get stunning results from it…

mmm..I’d forgotten that. Hopefully it’ll go this direction. I think they’d be onto something for sure in terms of improving on the M240. Sony just might want to keep this technology to themselves though and one other (Nikon). Though that said, a RF is a niche product. I wouldn’t think either would be too threatened if it went into a RF style camera. Who knows? Someone at Sony I guess would know the answer.
