Advertising on Prosophos.com?

Q&A

Advertisting on Prosophos.com?

I posed this question almost a year ago.

At that time, most of you were supportive of the idea, even if not exactly thrilled about ads.

In the end, I decided against it, because I really didn’t want to ruin the clean look of this site, and I didn’t want my content to be influenced (or perceived as being influenced) by commercial interests.

However, I’m still being approached by groups wanting to advertise on Prosophos.com, and… I’m thinking about it, mostly because of the time and energy I put into running the site.

Would you be okay with ads being placed here?  Please let me know via the poll below.

—Peter.

P.S.  The irony of having Polldaddy.com advertise in the poll below is not lost on me.

    Hello Peter,
May I leave a comment about this?
It really depends on what direction you wish to take for your blog.
I voted a “no” because I feel that if your blog is free from ad, it is projecting your philosophy of life, perfect & simple approach, appreciating & enjoying every little moment. It is very “Prosophos” (btw, I do not understand the meaning of this). Judging from the profession you are in & the philosophy that reflects from your writing about photography, I presume that it is not the little money that you are after and rather, it is a justification of your effort in running a site. I may be too naive & perhaps I may not see other aspects. In any case, I really appreciate your writing & your blog. It has inspired me!
    Best regards,
    Michael.

    Dear Peter,

I have enjoyed your blog since its birth. It´s always a gift to find people like you whose passion, devotion and honesty are capable to inspire others.
All this time you have shown to us how this blog is a work of love, and you want to keep it clean from ads.
For me it´s very pleasant to enjoy this cleanness. But, you know what? The most important is that you felt satisfied about your efforts.
So if you find a way to keep the spirit of this blog including ads… go ahead.
If it´s good for you it will be good for your readers.
Thank you for running this site.
    Best
    Israel

      Hello Israel,

It’s been a while – I’m glad you’re still visiting the site. It’s supportive comments like yours, Michael’s, and the ones in the poll (and the preliminary poll results) that reward my efforts the most and make me believe I’ve been on the right track.

I’m going to continue to resist advertising. I wish I could give you an elaborate analysis of my decision, but it comes down to following my heart.

Thank you everybody for your support.

      —Peter.

Peter, if I may, I’d like to leave a comment and suggestion. I follow your blog because it is genuine and based on emotion. Something you don’t typically find on the web. That being said, I’m realistic and can appreciate that running this blog brings with it certain financial costs. Irrespective of whether you can afford these costs or not, it really isn’t fair that you not only put your heart here, but also financial resources.

With that in mind, what I would like to suggest is that you have a separate tab just for advertisers. Your main area will, therefore, remain free, clear and consistent with your personal vision but you will still have the ability to take on some advertisers and it will then be up to your followers as to whether or not they view the ads.

Hi Peter. You’re a gentleman, truly. I’m plenty sure whether you allow ads they will be tastefull and helpfull — for any means, even offering choices to your followers for instance.
