Unusual for me was that I couldn’t decide between the two, though I was leaning towards the B&W version. My wife, like you, preferred the colour version.
The presence of colour is a distraction for this image.
(Particularly the green icing and the orange blouse!)
In the B&W image, my eyes are drawn directly to the brothers faces and the candles.
Regarding the “eyes are drawn to the brothers”, that was what appealed to me too about the B&W version.
