You take a lot of great portraits Peter. This is another! I’m so glad you are going to use colour film moving forward. Loads of character in the rendering.

That’s about as good as it gets Peter. I stand corrected on a previous comment that the M9 was better on colour, I forgot just how good Portra 400 is.

Thank you Pi. I didn’t mean to disagree with your earlier, but I believe we all forget what we had with film, before digital came along. I have had to learn that lesson many times over. Eventually, the convenience of digital seduces all of us.

    Wonderful portrait Peter.

Never really realized how beautiful the Portra colors where until a year ago. Just after when i decided that for color I would use mainly digital and BW i would use film. Probably will be the other way around for the coming period.

Lovely portrait. Lovely colors. Any chance you can return to the “magic light window” in your home to make a few more color (or black and white) images….on film or whatever medium you prefer? I know it was a photographic refuge in the darker time of the year but I expect the light there is always beautiful at some points in the day If it needs a name, I would nominate “Prosophos’ Window. “. You could call it anything you like when you are giving interviews (about the book).

Side note: Your blog is such a gift. Generous, educational, kind and a photographic inspiration. Your talent and accomplishments….even your self-declared disappointments….are exceptional.

This is a lovely image with great colors. But there have been many such posted here from your M9. If you still had an M9 (?), I’d not be urging you to abandon it in favor of film on the basis of this one image. Since you don’t have an M9 currently (?), I’m quite comfortable urging you to shoot more color film.

Lovely natural tones and colour, I like this Peter.

I’ve just borrowed an M3 (I currently own an M2). I can see why the viewfinder is peferred by those who largely shoot 50mm! It’s great. I might swap mine out at some stage!

Do you find Portra scans well right off the bat without a lot of colour balancing? I find moreso than any other film. Someone once said it scans like butter, I thought that was pretty accurate!

With all due respect to everyone here, I just don’t see that Peters film images are in any significant way better than his M9 images, or the ones from the Nikon df for that matter. I can certainly relate to the experience of shooting and processing my black and white films, but I doubt that I could tell the difference between a well exposed film image from a well exposed digital one, in a blind test without checking for grain structure.

      Hi Cory

I can only speak for myself. I mostly agree with you…..up to 90%! A great image is a great image regardless of medium and sensor. It is the reason I visit Peters site. The 10% where I err from your perspective is around the limitations of film. Each film has a distinct output. A digital sensor has this though also has a lot more latitude generally speaking (analogue vs digital). It’s the limitations of film which I feel brings out a touch of character.

Don’t get me wrong….you can do all this with digital (VSCO, Etc,etc) and most of the time won’t know. BUT that’s more to do with PP! I personally enjoy film for this reason as to what is recorded in analogue.

P.S. I detest “menus” on digital cameras, post production does become tedious for me and generally get very frustrated with technology :-)….

You are right that often it is hard to tell on the internet, which is which. But when it comes down to it I nearly always prefer film. Heres one of mine from back in the day:
