I’m going to comment on my own photo (I didn’t want my text to detract from the image above, so I’m placing my thoughts here in the comments section).

Firstly, in this image, I have quickly moved past the “testing” phase of my new/old M3 (http://photographsbypeter.com/2014/02/11/1963-m3-test-shot/). I am now certain that this particular M3, which has never been serviced since leaving the factory in 1963, is functioning perfectly. Unbelievable!

Secondly, this image was created using the humble Voigtländer Nokton 40/1.4, which is a lens I’ve written extensively about (http://photographsbypeter.com/2011/07/25/the-voigtlander-nokton-40mm-f1-4/). I believe the M3-Voigtländer 40 combination may be the most satisfying duo I’ve ever photographed with.

Thirdly, this image was created yesterday, as the sun was setting.

Yes, saw it afterwards, sorry. I’m very fond of the little 40mm, I’ve used it with a RD-1 and currently with a M8 and it’s always a good compromise between size and performance (and you’re a bit guilty for valuing this lens higher). You don’t use an M8 anymore?

Beautifully lit…pensive and whimsical at the same time.

I think we have a few of these around our house, but maybe more of the Pirate variety.

Reminds me of the “Singing Sword” from Bugs Bunny; but I’m not all that “literate”.

    🙂

Great photo Peter. Agreed with the 40 Nokton too, it was my first M lens experience with a Bessa and kicked off an intro to rangefinder photography. I still love this lens too, great to hear your M3 is in tip top shape too!

Oh that this too too solid flesh would melt. Thaw and resolve itself in 22 C DDx for 13 minutes…

You need only ask… although I’m not at all certain about that last bit, I think Willie might actually have been an instagram kind of guy.. 😉

Wow Peter what an amazing shot. You make the VC40 sing! A beautiful image and fitting title. How cool and liberating that in this digital age an instrument like the m3 and the 40mm can give that much satisfaction.

Let me repeat myself Peter, this is a magnificent photo! J and I were admiring it together and applauding your talent once again! Wow!

I bought my Nokton 40 a year and a half ago – your post and photographs being a major influence. I love this lens. On my M3, my Ikon, my M-9 — it has character, speed, and sharpness; a tremendous deal. And the focal length, while a tweener, is oddly perfect. I shoot with a lot of other lenses, but find I keep coming back to this one.

Your lovely photo above spectacularly illustrates why.

Thanks Jim. If I had to have just one camera and one lens for the rest of my photographic life, it would be a Leica film body fused to this little Voigtländer Nokton 40mm. The weakest link in that imaging chain would be me.
