Guest Post, Inspiration

Editor’s Note:

I am pleased to present the B&W film work of Matteo (the same gentleman who inspired this Q&A post yesterday).  Lately Matteo has been exploring film and rangefinder photography, and these images were created over the past several months.

Caro Matteo: your photos are very nice and interesting. Wisely composed. I am also starting to experiment with B&W film. Such a rewarding experience….but difficult as well…
Thank you Peter for such an interesting guest’s post.
    Cheers,

    Ciao dear Matteo ,

it is with great pleasure that I discovered , or rediscovered I your images!
Children are beautiful, just like every person in your set!
Expressions of these people all have a story … and you captured all this with great aesthetics ! In fact, your pictures are very stylish , and exude a retro scent, which does not displease me …
It also feels a special care to the composition and framing … without that we lose spontaneity aspect, which is the strength and feelings of a successful photo …
Very beautiful work dear Matteo ! I am not surprised that Peter hast wanted to present your work on the site!
Btw , I wish to thank him once again for the interest he has for many of us ! His website is like a museum of photography …
And it is a pleasure to know that your photos, Matteo , are present here!

I wish you a great year!

    Warmest regards .

    Hugues .

A big hello to my friend Peter ! the way!

PS: did not want to ” pollute” your post with the precision … but I understand you will not be against the idea of going digital !
One thing is for sure! As long as your eyes are healthy, you have to stay with the Leica rangefinder!
After M9 or new “M”? … If you’re just black and white, of course Leica MONOCHROM has no competitor …
Now the day when it will be possible to “invest”, should I say, buy your first digital Leica M … the new, may be worth more sure!
You lose a bit of magic, compared to M9 … but the results are excellent!
I signed the open letter to Leica, Peter wrote, so that the CCD is present on the future generation … It does not prevent, in many cases, the M240 is very good work! Specially with the 35 Lux FLE.
Finally, no matter which of the Leica I wish you to acquire … I know you will do us great pictures anyway!

Thank you Mark, Teresa, Hugues and Andrew for your kind comments! And last but not least, thank you again Peter for the opportunity to show my pictures on your beautiful site. It is such a honor to be represented here. While I like to discuss about the last camera gear and their technical improvements, I never forget the beauty of your work and the constant inspiration you bring to me. Whichever is the camera, your ability to capture the moment, the light, the mood is a great gift, and everything else goes to zero. Sometimes I realize I’m spending more time commenting technicalities instead of pictures, I’m sorry about that.
    Sincerely,
    Matteo

PS: Dear Hugues you are so kind, It is always a great pleasure to hear from you. As you can see I’m trying to put a new camera under the tree! But you have already an amazing equipment and you can ‘invest’ in most useful and wise things… like traveling and having fun with family and friends 🙂 I hope life is on your side and I wish you a great Christmas and holiday season!

    Matteo,

Excellent work! I too have been looking at digital Ms, but just haven’t pulled the trigger. I enjoy my film Ms as I find the skin tones are great with Portra, and I also appreciate the aesthetic qualities of slide films. I’ve been using more black and white lately, however, and have been experimenting with Tri-X and semi-stand development with Rodinol. The results are pleasing to me when I look at the negatives but I haven’t scanned anything yet (unfortunately, I don’t have a scanner). I’m curious what film and developer you’re using, and are you using any filters (i.e., yellow) when shooting black and white?

    Thanks for sharing!

    Matteo,

I’ve never shot film although had scanned thousands at my work (but not anymore), and always have a bit of “jealous” of this media… You’ve a great set to be proud of. Congratulations!

As for your question, if I may, to be very honest, above all, the rangefinder experience (outdated or not) is irreplaceable to me as long my eyes would good enough. If you’re confortable with your camera stay with it. 🙂

Wonderful images Matteo. Number one is the standout for me. No need to loose any sleep over what digital to choose when you are getting these kinds of results.

Thank you all for your comments, I really appreciate your kind words!
Kevin actually I’m not using filters, and unfortunately I’m not even doing in-house developing. Here in London I have no space at home, and I’m also working too much. I would like to spend more time on this important step… In Italy it would be much easier for me. Luckily there are a few good labs around the city where I can get what I want.
Luiz thank you! Your pictures are so beautiful, I’m really looking forward to seeing more from you! 🙂
Thank you so much Jason… I know that film can give nice results, but is such a crazy work! Nevertheless I love it even more because of that ☺
