      Thank you Kevin.

It’s very early, but I’m enjoying the Monochrom. Like those who have used one before me, it’s making me see things in a different way; the fact that I’m simultaneously using the 90/2 is also forcing me to change my approach.

My initial frustrations with the file processing are now gone because I learned to not fight with the files… they’re almost perfect as they emerge from the camera.

Overall, I’m getting the natural B&W look I was missing after I parted with my M8, with the added bonus of a FF sensor (and higher ISO capabilities, of course).

If I still had to choose just one camera, though, it would be the M9 for its versatility in both B&W and colour.

      Hope that helps,

      Peter.

Glad to hear you’re enjoying it so far Peter. I concur with what you are saying about versatility, but for me, I find the high ISO performance on the M9 is a really significant disadvantage as I generally avoid flash even at night indoors. The MM definitely overcomes this disadvantage in a huge way. Moreover, for me, I almost always convert everything to BW anyway so the MM fits me better.

As for the processing of the MM files. What I find is that the MM files require more detailed processing as compared to the M9 files. Specific areas of the MM files can be adjusted and still be consistent with the overall picture whereas the M9 files are better suited to overall adjustments. At least that’s my experience.

I’ve been looking at Steve’s pictures in his M review so far and while I’m not actually crazy about the greater amount of saturation, as compare to the M9, the BW do look quite good. However, as best as I can tell, the high ISO performance still isn’t quite as good as the MM; and, of course, the M files definitely have a different feel from the M9 ones. Maybe the ultimate versatility will come with the next iteration of the M body – at least that’s my hope!

        Cheers,
        Kevin

Actually Kevin today on his post, there is a photo of his nephew in B&W. This is first image I seen from an M which caught my eye as something resembling the M9.
