Strangely, reassurance (at least for me) that Leica’s new CMOS sensor-based “M” may retain the exceptional image quality of the “old” CCD sensor-based M9 (and M8) at base ISO has come from an unlikely source — the Fuji X-E1.
(I write “strangely” because none of the leaked Leica images have been reassuring.)
I’ve been following the Fuji X-E1 for a little while now, and can honestly state that the rendering of this CMOS-based camera is spectacular, even at base ISO.

I totally agree Peter, and it’s not even a Full frame sensor which of course the Leica M will have. I am very curious and waiting for the Fuji X100S which is supposed to have a more improved sensor to the X-E1… Exciting times ahead indeed.
Thanks RSE for the additional information. I knew about the X100s, but I didn’t realize that the sensor will be further improved, although it doesn’t surprise me given the pace of developments. A little research after reading your comments confirms you’re correct… exciting times indeed.
Hi Peter, interesting that you shared your thoughts on the E-X1. Since December last year I own this beautiful little machine and the combo with the 35mm 1.4 lens is magical. It produces outstanding images and even wide open it’s stunning, sharp and I love the bokeh. Also the size & weight is perfect and compared to my bulky DSLR, it is a winner for me. I would say that this is a great alternative if you can’t afford Leica equipment;-).
It’s nice to get comments from an actual owner like yourself Jeroen. Yes, the image quality appears to be outstanding and what’s caught my attention is the specific combination of the X-E1 and the 35/1.4 you have… the rendering of Fuji’s 35/1.4 looks more pleasing to me than Leica’s 35/1.4 FLE.
🙂 thanks!
I’m not so sure Peter. Hard to make an apple taste like an orange.
True.
