I post-processed this one in a slightly more subdued fashion (I’m still refining my use of Lightroom, following my recent switch from Aperture).

A delightful shot… “Little Big Man”. Such happiness.
Please share your reason(s) for moving to Lightroom.
Thanks John.
I moved to Lightroom after my iMac hard drive failed a few weeks ago (if you recall, I wrote about it on this site).
Although my images were backed up, my software wasn’t. So I lost my copy of Aperture. I’ve heard that the “updated” version now being sold is sort of buggy, so I’m not keen on re-purchasing it. Also, buying the latest version would necessitate upgrading my OS… which I’m not interested in doing. Finally, it appears that Apple has somewhat abandoned Aperture, providing little support for it these days. Which is a shame… because it was/is my favourite imaging editing program.
I’d been using Lightroom a little bit for a few months now, and I still had a “free” copy of it available with my purchase of the M9, so I decided to go 100% with LR for now.
Of course, this necessitates a learning curve.
It’s one reason why it’s never a good idea to change your “system” (cameras, lenses, software) often, because your productivity invariably takes a hit in the beginning.
Sometimes, though, it helps with creativity, so it’s not all bad.
Peter, thank you for going to the trouble of writing a detailed reply.
John
Thanks for your thanks :).
That lens! It does the craziest most beautiful things…. and it’s the perfect complement to your talents.
Sadly it’s hard to see a time when I could afford one, let alone learn how to focus it wide-open on the street.
Wonderful work peter.
Thank you Chris. I’ve had to give up most of my lens line-up for it, and I’m still not fully committed to owning it. We’ll see.
Until I make up my mind, I’ll shoot everything with it.
Peter,
When exploring Lightroom 4, I came across these videos:

You probably know all of these techniques, but perhaps others (like me) don’t.
John
As someone who color corrects images for clients such as The North Face, Visa and Levis – the appeal of your work is primarily the post-processing. Your style, to me, is extracting texture details along with clarity, saturation without harsh tonal transitions and framing your subject matter by what appears to be a layered dodging and burning technique.
So for me, some of that is lost in this particular de-saturated and washed out example by comparison to your previous post-processing.
You have a nice balance of in-camera capture and post-processing treatment.
That’s my .02. I’ll give you my PayPal info so you can refund. 😉
Truly a fan of your work Pete.
Hey Bob,
I truly appreciate you taking the time to offer your thoughts.
I would have to agree, this one is more de-saturated, and lacking a bit of the “punch” I try to give most of my colour shots. Suffice it to say, it’ll take some time for me to find my groove with the new software. The funny thing is, now that I’m using LR, I’ve been able to improve in some areas (see tomorrow’s post), and have taken a step back in others.
Cheers,
Peter.
