Actually, the lens is quite sharp at the point of focus (clinical sharpness is one of the things that bothered me the first time I used it)… it’s just that the plane of focus is so shallow at f/0.95 that everything else — except the point of focus — is soft. My own view is that the f/0.95 — when everything works right — confers a pleasing and complex “rounded-ness” to images.
I’ll clarify this point of “rounded” rendering in tomorrow’s post.
