Question regarding the exposure, how did you manage to keep the background dark? I would say based on how well the subject is exposed, the background would also be brighter. Is it due to PP?

The background is not all dark – look again near the top. Then, guess what’s going on. If you can’t, I’ll help you.
Is it the sun which helped in getting the right exposure for the subject?
Yes. It’s the sun, low on the horizon, being filtered through tree leaves. That’s what’s giving the light on the young boy’s face a speckled appearance.
