Yesterday, I posted this image, taken with my Leica M9…
(please click on the image to view)
…and asked you to guess which lens was used. Many of you were generous with your time and responded.
I appreciate the effort (and guts!) of all of you who took the time to record your best guess.
Moreover, reading the analysis behind each choice was very interesting and educational (I urge those of you who haven’t read through the comments of the original post to please do so).
So now, without further delay — the answer.
And the answer is…
_
(a) Voigtländer Nokton 40/1.4.
(b) Leica 50 Summicron.
(c) Voigtländer Nokton 35/1.2.
(d) Leica 50 Summilux ASPH.
(e) Leica 35 Summilux FLE.
_
Yes, the little Voigtländer Nokton 40mm.
(If you want to read an old write-up of mine on this lens, please see here.)
Thanks for playing :),

“Get in” as they say…..;-) I’m interested to know, did my reasoning make sense to you????
Great post and really good fun Peter.
Ha! 🙂
he he he I guess those long hours of researching Voigtländer lenses were good for something after all! 🙂 I’m still very happy with my 35 1.2 (except for the excessive CAs wide open), but the 40 1.4 is a lovely lens – and sooo small!
Now gentlemen, no gloating ;)…
I’m actually surprised at how many of you guessed correctly. I *think* I would have had difficulty, if the roles were reversed.
And, yes Jason, your reasoning made complete sense.
As for those who guessed incorrectly, don’t worry, your reasoning made sense too.
Peter.
I still haven’t bought that lens, in the main because I just have too much gear at the minute…..yes the penny has finally dropped in that regard. It would probably be the only other lens I’d even consider buying at the moment, your able to squeeze that bit of magic out of it for sure.
I’ve read the comments again, your quite right about even the incorrect reasoning making sense…..
YEAAAA !!!! I am glad to have find the answer 😉 …My reasoning was simple:
firstly the perspective( less compressed than for a 50 but just a tiny bit more the 35 )
After this, i Have the 35 lux and 50 cron as well and did not fell the ” signature ” of theses 2 Lenses … BTW it was very interisting and fun as an Idea dear Peter !!!
Thanks for this test…But I am a bit sorry to not mut My M9 on the table ! SNIF SNIF 😉
Hope to see very soon some of your Beautifull pictures and BTW your choice Lenses…
Have a great time mon Ami !
Respectfully .
Hugues.
Hi Peter. Very funny and interesting idea. I didn’t take part but certainly would answer one of the voigtlanders — harsh highlights.
Thanks Luiz! But… no fair!… it’s too easy to answer *after* the fact ;).
True. 🙂
Hi . Can you tell us what shutter speed and ISO was used? In general , I find this info useful because it helps me compare and guide my own exposure settings in similar light conditions . thanks for the blog.
Hi Antoine,
I’d be happy to help. The parameters were:
1/180, ISO 160, f/1.4.
Hope this helps,
Peter.
