A mysterious picture. Peter I don’t understand the 8 s exposure… Why so? Was it almost dark? But there is blue sky above the horizon! Was it to overcome the filter? I can’t help but wonder what the scene would be without the filter.
Trying to learn.
John
Hi John, thanks for the note.
The sun had not yet risen above the horizon, and it was a brutally cloudy day. I had set out in the middle of snowstorm to photograph the falling snow… which abruptly stopped the minute I arrived 😦 …
I shot an 8 sec exposure to blur the water and waves – to make it all appear like a smooth sheet of glass. I needed the ND filter to block out the light, as little as it was, which at 8 seconds would have overexposed the shot.
Hope that helps.
Peter.
I should have added… You used the Zeiss 21/2.8 for the shot yet the horizon is horizontal. Was much correction (levelling) involved?
I did read somewhere that with UW lenses it’s advisable to have a foreground … to lead the eye from the foreground. Well, with this picture you have done that admirably.
John
Yes, this was shot with the Zeiss 21/2.8… but no correcting was involved. This is the shot as it was, as rendered by the Zeiss.
That lens is brilliant, as is your shot! Did you handhold the filter?
Thanks Luta! The filter was screwed on – it’s a 46mm diameter 3 stop neutral density filter.
Dear P – just ordered this lens for my m9 as I’ve heard so many good things about it. Do you have an accessory viewfinder such as the Zeiss or have you been successful at framing by just “winging it”. $400 for a viewfinder seems excessive.
Kevin
I’ve been “winging it”… Congratulations on the Zeiss!
