Three men & their different states of concentration lined up by the day’s ebb & flow like by the spin of a lever-operated slot machine: of a so-called one-armed bandit. Each with his own particular state of concentration aboard a platform of either electronic or physical mobility.Within such context, the wheelchair icon suggests our era’s universal dependance on a prosthetic device of one sort or another. The faces of the two mobile-phone manipulators brightly reflect the scarce ambient light, but we can but scarcely imagine their immediate thoughts. The mysterious bus driver’s facial features are totally enveloped in darkness, yet we can nevertheless clearly construe his current concerns.

I can’t say any of this was on my mind when I photographed this scene, with the exception of this: the layering of the three men. In reviewing the image, I also became aware of the three “worlds” these men inhabited — they were completely unaware of each other… and much of the rest of the world. Sort of like all of us.

I like your observation about how we are all dependent on prosthetic devices. It’s true.

And I also like your initial description of the lining up of things, “like by the spin of a lever-operated slot machine…”.
