Pole position.

2012, Inspiration, Teaching point, Voigtländer 40mm f/1.4 Nokton

This is a grab shot, taken yesterday during one of my Practical Photography – Teaching sessions.

At the time, I was discussing the importance of Strong Diagonals in images, as well as the importance of pre-focusing to nail shots like these at wide Apertures — in this case f/1.4.

Fortunately, this woman walked by, allowing me to illustrate the above points, as well as allowing me to demonstrate the importance of capturing an ambulating figure in mid-step.

And yes, this image was taken with the lovely little Voigtländer 40mm Nokton 40/1.4 — an extremely underrated lens.

A good image and a good illustration of your point. I imagine that it was a great learning experience for your student.

As an aside, I like you coming back to your C.V 40/1.4, it makes a nice change from your 35 lux FLE images, which IMHO were starting to look too perfect and clean to me. They lacked the emotion I normally feel in your images. I stress the IMHO.

Thanks Guy! I can never resist being away from the little Voigtländer 40 Nokton for long. Your comment about “too perfect” 35/1.4 ASPH FLE images is a fair one… still, the lens is more interesting in its rendering than the 50/1.4 ASPH.

I’ve written this once (in my Nokton 40/1.4 report: The Voigtlander Nokton 40/1.4), and I’ll write it again: I could shoot with the Nokton 40/1.4 as my only lens for the rest of my life and I would be happy.
